Poetry as Protest art exhibition at SPAN Arts

Narberth, Pembrokeshire — Resistance is Fertile, an exhibition of protest poetry presented as visual art by Narberth Poets, will open at SPAN Arts in Narberth on 6 May, from 2:30pm to 4:30pm. The exhibition, which brings together poetry and accompanying artwork, will run until 4 June. Entry is free.

Visitors are also warmly invited to attend a special Welcome Wednesday event on 27 May at 10:30am, featuring live readings by the poets.

The exhibition showcases new and developed work by six poets — Bean Sawyer, Jane Campbell, Jackie Biggs, Jean Riley, Christian Donovan, and Emma Baines. Since its earlier showings at Narberth Museum last summer and at Oriel y Parc in St Davids earlier this year, the artists have expanded the collection with new pieces.

Resistance is Fertile was created as a response to political, social, and environmental injustices in the world today. Through their work, the poets aim to inspire reflection and encourage audiences to question and challenge the status quo. The exhibition highlights how collaboration and creativity can act as powerful tools for change, while sustaining a sense of hope.

Previous audiences have responded strongly to the exhibition:

“Such a powerful exhibition – don’t miss it. Poetry as protest – by a collective of wonderful poets from Pembrokeshire. Poetry as resistance against silence – and such beauty too – bearing witness – a reminder of what is happening in Gaza.”

— Professor Emerita Menna Elfyn, University of Wales Trinity Saint David and President of Wales PEN Cymru

“The exhibition is really powerful and very moving. I had to sit there for a while to let it all land; the poems did what poems should — brought me up short.”

— Kate Sherringer, North Pembs Amnesty Group

“Thought-provoking work, from some excellent poets… Great variety, too, in the visual art forms.”

— Diana Powell, writer

Visitors have also shared their reflections in the Book of Wishes:

“Such a powerful exhibition. Beautiful and moving.”

“Every time I come I read one or two poems each time. They give me more.”

“Thank you for the opportunity to pause, think and reflect.”
