FAQs
What is a scratch night?
A scratch night is a platform for new, in-progress work to be performed for the first time. Writers see their words come alive, gather feedback, and build confidence – all in a welcoming, creative atmosphere.
Do I need to be a professional?
Absolutely not. We welcome submissions from writers and musicians at all stages of their creative journey. You just need to:
- Identify as LGBTQIA+
- Be aged 18+
- Live in Pembrokeshire, Ceredigion, or Carmarthenshire
Can I submit in Welsh?
Yes! We welcome submissions in Welsh, English, or bilingually. If you use a language other than Welsh or English, please include a translation.
Do I keep the rights to my work?
Yes – the work is fully yours. By submitting, you grant SPAN permission to have it performed at the scratch night on 27th September, but ownership remains with you.
Do I have to perform?
Writers: You can choose to perform your own work or have it read by professional actors.
Musicians: You’ll need to perform your own material acoustically.
Who will select the submissions?
A panel from SPAN’s queer steering group, including:
Jane Campbell (Award-winning Poet)
Bean Sawyer (Novelist, Poet, Filmmaker)
Ash Kriengsak (Playwright, Filmmaker)
Anna Sherratt (Songwriter, Librettist, Playwright)
Whether it’s your first time writing or your hundredth, Writing Out is a place to experiment, express, and connect. We can’t wait to read your work.
Submit by 14th July 2025 to info@span-arts.org.uk
